Nishmas Day 7 | Mrs. Jackie Bitton
I Can Smile
We are so rich — we just have to recognize it. How many mornings have we opened our eyes, sipped a steaming coffee, walked into work — never once celebrating these 3 miracles — among countless in our day? It's only when these precious gifts – our health, our senses, our mobility – hang in the balance that we recognize what we've been given. In the words of Jackie Bitton: I was invited to a high school to work with an 11th grader named Miri. Her story completely changed my perspective on life. A few months prior, she had woken up with an intense pain in her throat. Her worried parents immediately took her to the hospital. After countless hours of testing, a doctor shared the devastating news that Miri had a rare form of cancer, and that she needed to undergo emergency surgery the next day. The doctor then began to list the possible side effects, ending with the words that shattered her world: "Miri will probably never be able to smile again." "In that moment," she told me, "I couldn't breathe. I ran from the room, my father calling after me, 'Miri, stop!' When he caught up to me, I looked into his eyes and cried, 'Abba, I'd rather live with this illness my entire life than never smile again!'" Of course, there was no option not to do the surgery, a delicate procedure that lasted for hours. When Miri finally awakened, the nurses gathered around her bed. With gentle encouragement, they asked, "We'd like to test your muscle strength, Miri. Could you try to smile for us?" As she recounted those moments, her mouth formed a soft smile, and she said – “I can smile”. And, what a radiant smile she had — the most beautiful expression of gratitude I have ever seen. Each morning we open our eyes to countless miracles. We can see, we can hear, we can feel. We have minds that think, hearts that love, and yes — faces that can smile. How can we ever stop thanking?
