Nishmas Day 31 | Rabbi Yechiel Spero
What If It Was Yours?
Right now, we find ourselves in the midst of a hostage crisis. For the past year and a half, we’ve whispered their names in our daily tefilos as we wait for their safe return. Nearly forty years ago, the world witnessed a different hostage crisis — the nightmare at Entebbe. An Air France flight carrying many Jewish passengers was hijacked and forced to land at Entebbe Airport in Uganda. In a chilling echo of the Holocaust, the terrorists separated the Jews from the other passengers, holding them captive under unthinkable conditions. What followed was one of the most daring rescue operations ever attempted. Israeli special forces flew below radar detection, racing against time with only hours to prepare. Using a hastily constructed model of the airport to practice their mission, they executed what seemed impossible — saving every single life in a breathtaking operation that stunned the world. But behind the headlines and military heroics, something equally powerful was unfolding. Across the Jewish world, there was an outpouring of tefilah unlike anything seen before. In the Mir Yeshiva, Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz, already frail and unwell, addressed his thousands of talmidim. As he stood at the steps of the aron kodesh, his eyes red from weeping, he delivered what would become one of the most unforgettable drashos in the yeshiva's history. His voice breaking with emotion, he looked out at the sea of young faces and asked: "What if it was your brother? Your mother? Your sister? How hard would you cry for their pain?" As a member of Ohel Sarala, you’ve shown that you can feel someone else's suffering as deeply as your own. When you daven with that depth of caring, your tefilos don't just reach shamayim, they shake it, generating powerful yeshuos for your partner —- and for you.
