Nishmas Day 27 | Rav Gav Friedman

When Everything is Only Good

It's easy to thank Hashem when life unfolds according to our plan. But when the curveballs are thrown, can we still hold on tight to the knowledge that everything He does is good? There was a young couple living in Israel whose 2-year-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer. The medical team outlined the difficult treatment plan and challenges ahead, but something about the parents' reaction seemed off. They were too composed, too accepting. Concerned, the doctor called for a social worker. When the social worker, a warm yet irreligious woman, arrived and repeated the diagnosis, the parents nodded. "Yes, we understand," they said. Perplexed, she asked, "Why are you so calm? This isn't a typical reaction to such news." The father looked at her and replied, "Hashem runs the world. Obviously, we would never have chosen this, but we trust that He knows what's best." The social worker was struck by his words. "This is only the second time I've witnessed such a response," she shared. She then recounted how when she first began working at the hospital, a neurologist had called her to speak with a Chassidishe family who had just been told there was no hope for their 16-year-old daughter. She had asked them the same question: "If you understand what's happening, how can you be so at peace with it?" The father of that teenage girl had answered with profound simplicity: "Hashem is hakol tov. We recognized his goodness when He gave us the most amazing gift, our daughter. Of course, we wish we weren't facing this news, but we trust that this too is good." The social worker never forgot that interaction. It had fundamentally shifted her understanding of what true emunah is. What makes this story even more remarkable is its ending. The 16-year-old girl, whom doctors were certain would not survive, experienced a complete recovery. And the little girl is now on the road to recovery as well. When the way forward is dark and uncertain, there’s nothing more powerful that we can do than trust that Hashem's plan is truly good.
