Nishmas Day 34 | Rabbi Gavriel Friedman

Thank You Anyway

Rav Gav Sometimes our greatest blessings arrive disguised as disappointments. Naturally, we push back. It’s so much easier than accepting and tapping into the good in our situation. There was a dedicated teacher who poured her heart into her students each day. She spent hours researching new methods, developing creative lessons, and investing deeply in each student's success. Her classroom was where she thrived, where she knew she made a difference. But as the new school year approached, she received shocking news. Despite her dedication and talent, enrollment numbers had shifted, and there was no longer a position for her. The rejection stung deeply. What would she do now? After a few days of wallowing in disappointment, she made the decision to recite Mizmor L'Todah every day. At first, the words felt mechanical, almost forced. But she persisted, expressing her thanks day after day despite the challenge of losing her job. Gradually, something shifted within her. The words began to take on new meaning, as she honed in on Hashem’s constant goodness. After forty days of faithfully saying this chapter of tehillim, she received an offer for a teaching position that exceeded all her expectations — better pay, a greater opportunity for impact, and a level of professional satisfaction she hadn't experienced before. The seeds of gratitude she planted had blossomed into unexpected blessings. Who knows what will grow when we choose gratitude over despair?
