Nishmas Day 9 - Rabbi YY Jacobson | The Greatest Teacher in History
אֱלֹקֵי כָל הָרִאשׁוֹנִים וְהָאַחֲרוֹנִים אֱלֹקֵי כָל הַבְּרִיּוֹת, אֲדוֹן כָּל הַתּוֹלָדוֹת
The G-d of all generations—those who came before and those who will come after. The G-d of all creation, Master of all that is, was, and ever will be.
This posuk is a reminder of the opportunity we have in every moment of our lives — to connect with eternity.
A philosopher once asked his students: Who is the greatest teacher in the world, yet ultimately kills all of his students?
The students were puzzled. Why would a great teacher do such a thing?
Finally, one student raised his hand. "Time," he answered.
What time teaches us — through years, through experience, through loss and growth, no one else can. And yet, time never stops. It keeps moving, indifferent to whether we’re ready to move on or not.
Time is relentless. You're in the middle of enjoying something, and it comes to an end. You're sleeping, and the sun comes up.
And yet, there is a way to transcend it.
When we recognize that we are connected to the One who created time and is above time, we begin to understand that every moment of genuine connection with Hashem becomes part of something that does not end.
That tefillah or mitzvah may have taken two minutes. It may have taken five.
But because it is a connection to the Eternal, it becomes eternal itself.
