הִנֵּה לֹא יָנוּם וְלֹא יִישָׁן — Hashem neither slumbers nor sleeps.

We know in the Torah repetition is never accidental — each word carries its own meaning. 

So why say both? What is the difference between sleep and slumber.

Sleep is deep and complete. Slumber is lighter, the kind of drifting off that happens on the couch in the middle of the afternoon. 

And yet, Hashem does neither. Not even for a moment. Not even a catnap. He is constantly watching over Klal Yisroel. 

We are living through a time when we can see this more clearly than ever.

In the weeks leading up to and during Pesach, thousands of Iranian missiles were launched toward Eretz Yisroel. And yet, the number of casualties was strikingly small in comparison.

Chazal tell us in the Yerushalmi, and the Rambam brings it as well, that when Mashiach comes, many of the Yamim Tovim, like Purim and Pesach, will be nisbatel. 

Not because those weren’t incredible nissim. But because the miracles of Yemos HaMashiach will be so great, they will pale in comparison.

Chazal give a mashal to a poor man who has nothing to his name. One day, he finds $100 in the street. He’s overjoyed to finally be able to feed his family. That day becomes like his personal Yom Tov, something he remembers year after year.

Then one day, he wins a million dollar lottery. Suddenly, the $100 is completely forgotten.

הִנֵּה לֹא יָנוּם וְלֹא יִישָׁן. Hashem is watching over us constantly, carefully, with precision we can’t even begin to grasp.

And He will continue to do so—
 until, בעזרת ה׳, we hear the shofar of Mashiach,
 and are זוכה to:
וְהִשְׁתַּחֲווּ לַה׳ בְּהַר הַקֹּדֶשׁ בִּירוּשָׁלָיִם.
