As humans, there's nothing as scary as losing control.
We’re wired to rely on previous experiences, on input generating output. But when our plans go haywire and the ground beneath us is giving way — where do we turn?
In the words of Jackie Bitton:
I was settling into an early morning flight when I noticed my seatmate: a big, friendly man dressed head-to-toe in Delta uniform, from the sharp hat and gleaming pilot pin, to the pristine, freshly pressed suit jacket.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I asked him, "Are you a Delta super-fan or an airline employee?" He smiled. "I'm a pilot — I've actually flown this very plane we're on today." When I mentioned how thrilling it must be for his family to fly with him, his face lit up. "I have two beautiful children, and yes, they absolutely love it."
And then, this complete stranger then shared a story with me that completely shifted how I think about trust.
"About a year ago, I was piloting a flight to South Carolina when we hit the most vicious turbulence I had ever encountered in my 11 years as a pilot. Items were flying through the cabin, passengers were screaming, people genuinely thought it was the end."
He paused, then continued with pride: "But only two people on that entire plane didn't flinch — my kids. They sat there completely calm, completely unafraid. What was there to fear? After all, they knew their Daddy was up there, manning the controls”.
His words hit me like lightning.
This flight called life can feel terrifying and turbulent at times.
But like those children, we can sit with calm and confidence, trusting that everything will be okay, because our Father is the Pilot.
